Our old washing machine broke a couple of months ago; and, even though we could have fixed it, we decided it was time to go with a new front loader instead.The main reason we wanted front loading machines was because of the space savings when stacked.After a week of research, we settled on either this LG model or the comparable Samsung, based on reading pretty much every review we could find - we settled on the LG because of price.

Aside from the fact that these are extremely heavy compared to our old top loaders, the installation was fairly straight forward.The water hoses are a couple of feet longer than a typical washer hose (even other front loaders), which was great for us since we ended up stacking them a few feet from the water inputs.They are also very easy to setup and use.

At first we were a bit nervous about the height of the machines when stacked, but those fears were completely unfounded.I'm 5'9" and I can access both the washer and dryer with ease.The washer tub is actually tilted upward to make it easier to access when it's sitting on the floor instead of a stand.As a quick reference, if you're worried about the height, the bottom of the dryer opening sits at 54" when stacked, the center of the dryer control knob sits at 76", and the top of the dryer is at 79".

Aside from the obvious space savings, here are the things we've really liked about this washer:
1) It runs very quietly with no noticeable vibration.I was worried about this after reading reviews for other front loaders, but it hasn't been a problem at all - even with both the washer & dryer stacked and running at the same time.
2) It gets our clothes at least as clean as our old washer ever did; but it uses a lot less water to do it.(It's supposed to be easier on the clothes too, but I have no way to verify that.)
3) The controls are intuitive and easy to use.
4) We can fit an amazing amount in each load.Our old washer was a high capacity top loader, but this thing can probably clean almost twice as many clothes in each load.It is especially nice when it comes time to clean bedding that didn't even fit in the old washer.
5) I love the load sense feature.This is one of the things you should read the manual to figure out how to use; but it is definitely worth the effort.Basically, it tells you how much detergent you need to add in order to get the clothes clean for that particular load - I use it to tell me when the load is full by just adding clothes until it says I need the full amount of deterget:).It really does eliminate a lot of guess-work.

As usual, there are some things I wish I could change:
1) You can't use powder detergent with liquid bleach in the same load.You need to have either powder or liquid for both.
2) The controls don't remember settings, which can be a bit irritating since we use the same settings 95% of the time.Luckily they are easy to set, but you do need to reprogram it every time you turn it on.
3) The washer door only opens one way (the hinge is on the left), which is great if that's the way you need it to open.In our case, it opened the wrong way so we had to rearrange the room a bit.Fortunately, the long hoses made it possible to rearrange everything without a lot of extra effort or expense.

Another thing I had read about the front loaders was that the door needs to be left open between loads.I thought this would be a pain, but it really hasn't been a big deal at all.The manual doesn't actually recommend doing that; but says to periodically run a tub clean cycle (I think it says to do it every month) to eliminate any odor.I figure I'll leave the door open as well just to be safe.

Overall we are extremely pleased with these.I guess time will tell if they hold up as well as our old top loader did, but so far I'm pretty confident that they will.I highly recommend these if you're looking for a new washer and dryer.

Wonderwash Review

I bought the Wonder Wash basically because I'm lazy when it comes to doing laundry, I hate going to the laundry mat and I like gadgets.I came across this item while searching for something else.I had no intention of buying anything like this nor knew it even existed until I discovered it.I read the reviews positive and negative.Most of the reviews I read on other sites complained more about the company's customer service rather than the product itself.But after doing my research, I bit the bullet and decided to give it a try.

I live on the 4th floor of a 4 floor walk up in NYC.We have laundry facilities in the basement of the building and a few laundry mats near by, but like I said I'm lazy and hate doing laundry.I've had this unit for over a month and have done many loads.To make a long story short, this machine works for me.Here's my take:

Pros:
*Inexpensive: for what it does, its a fairly good buy at $40.As for detergents, bleach and fabric softener, I only have to use 1 - 2 tbsps. depending on the size of the load or less if the detergent is 2x concentrated.My building laundry costs about $3 a load, I average 3 loads a session, so I figure with the savings on quarters and detergent, this machine will pay for itself in no time.
*Convenient:I can wash a load in my apartment anytime day or night during the weeknight or on the weekend.My clothes don't pile up as much anymore. I find that I wash my clothes more often because of the convenience.
*Small:The unit only weights 6lbs when empty and is very portable. I live in a tiny one bedroom with little extra space.I can just put this away in my closet when not in use.
*Sanitary: I can wash my clothes without worrying about whatever kind of nastiness has been washed previously in the community washer.My building's machines are always dirty and usually need to be wiped down.
*Quick:Although you can technically "wash" a load in 2 minutes, you also need to factor in the draining and rinsing time.So I would say to wash a full load of laundry takes about 5 minutes.Which is still very quick compared to a conventional washer.
*Effective:I don't expect miracles from this machine.I still pre-treat my clothes if necessary and I still use bleach in my wash loads when need.I have to say with some hot water and 2 - 5 minutes of labor, my clothes come out very clean.
*Manually Powered:I'm a gadget person, so I love to push buttons and make cool things happen, however, a lot has to be said for going old school.I like the fact that I don't have to worry about where to plug the unit in or that a motor burning out.A little arm workout doesn't hurt either.

Cons:
*The machine is basically made of plastic.The manufacture says that it's made of the highest, most durable plastic, but at times the brackets do seem a bit wobbly.The washer itself seems sturdy.The base is questionable. Some of the small screw caps did not stay in place, but they are not essential to the unit staying together or washing properly.
*Can be messy:Washing clothes in this unit is not the tidiest of processes.I initially tried it in my kitchen, but I spilled more water than I used, so I eventually move the unit to my bathtub and found that it fits perfectly and I don't have a problem with water being everywhere.
*No assembly instructions: The unit does not come with a lot of instructions on how to put it together, but it's not that difficult to figure out. You are really only assembling the base not the tub. You really can look at the pieces laid out and see how it all fits together.It took me less than 10 minutes to unbox and assemble.
*Where the suction?:The unit does have suction cups for stability, but I have to say they stick the best when you don't need them to.When the water splashes, the suction cups tend to not stay in place.However, I've found when using the unit in the bathtub, this wasn't an issue.The unit did still slide around a bit but not enough to disrupt the washing process.
*Bait and Switch: When I received my Wonder Wash I was surprised to find they sent me a Sputnik 3 that looks exactly like a Wonder Wash, but was renamed.I hadn't seen anything on their site claiming they renamed the units, so I was a little suspicious.However, the unit seems to do what the Wonder Wash claims to do, so I kept the unit.I can, however, see how other reviewers see this as a bait and switch and question the quality of the Sputnik 3 compared to the Wonder Wash.I can only speak for my unit and say that so far I haven't had any problems.I do think the manufacturer should really clear this up or stop sending out the Sputnik 3s as Wonder Wash.
*Hard to Crank:When I first started using the unit, it was at times hard to crank.But, through trial and error, I found that the amount of water you use for the size of the load is every important.The instructions say that the smaller the load less water is needed, but I didn't necessarily find that to be the case all the time.I eventually found that over time you will be able to determine what the right clothes to water ratio is to make it crank smoothly.The right amount of water in the unit can make the cranking action effortless.
*The Tricky Lid:The lid for the machine can be a little tricky.It's almost like working with a child-proof cap to get the right fit.The trick is to unscrew the lid all the way until you almost take the screw out.Place the lid on the unit and lock the lid in the groves around the unit.Hold the lid in place around the groves and then tighten screw back all the way down.By doing this, you get the tightest fit and therefore the most pressure and fewer leaks.When you loosen the lid after a wash, you should hear a hissing sound of the air releasing, then you know you had a good tight fit.
*No Spin Cycle:Since this is not your typical washing machine with a spin cycle you will need to either ring your clothes dry by hand or do like I did and buy an Spin Dryer Centrifugal Clothes Portable Spin Dryer.As stated before I'm lazy when it comes to laundry, so wring out the clothes after washing would have been deal breaker in buying a Wonder Wash.The Spin Dryer completes the Wonder Wash.

Overall, I like the machine.Yes, I can see areas of improvement, but so far, so good. That's not to say that if given the choice I wouldn't buy a regular washer, but for my current situation it works.Especially now that the cold weather is on it's way, the thought of staying in my warm apartment and getting a couple of loads of laundry done in about 30 mins. makes the Wonder Wash a really good buy for me.

Wonder Washer Review

I bought this to alleviate the amount of laundry I need to lug out into the street. It is good for maintaining in-between laundry and not to be used as a subsitute for a big machine. I use it to wash my daily wear like tank tops, shorts, personal items and delicates. It can wash up to about three to four women's sized tank tops maximum. Its good for baby clothes.

How it works:
-Pour water into bucket, put in clothes and detergent, not to exceed the capacity line inside the bucket. (7L for small loads, 10L for bigger loads)
-Lock on top lid
-Place bucket on the motorized base (similar structure to a blender)
-Plug in cord and select cycle (standard or delicates) and amount of time from selection: 3,6,9,12, or 15 minutes
-Let machine wash. There's a really flat agitator on the inside bottom of bucket that turns clockwise for a few seconds, pauses, and then turns counterclockwise and keeps going in this cycle until the timer is up.

Here's the bad part, there's no rinse cycle since there is no plumbing so you have to pour the water out. I don't reccommend pouring it through the holes on the lid (see picture) because the lid does not lock on tightly and the plastic although thick, is still cheaply made. So just remove the cap, take the clothes out, put in a basin and rinse the detergent off in a sink. Unplug, then remove bucket and pour water out. While the rinsing is annoying, I would pick this anyday over lugging my laundry in the street. And it's just rinsing that you have to do, which is easy compared to handwashing.

Pros:
-Can wash small daily items/delicates
-Cuts down trips to the laundromat
-Saves money
-Do laundry in privacy of your own home
-No plumbing required
-Affordable

Cons:
-Made of cheap looking plastic so be careful not to bang it up
-Top lid does not lock on tight
-No rinse cycle, you need to rinse yourself
-Design is not that sleek/attractive

Tips:
-Wait for clothes to presoak in the detergent before turning on the timer
-Wash light and dark colors seperately
-Do not wash wools as it will shed little pieces that can clog the agitator
-Reuse the soapy water for a second load
-Buy a fold out dryer (I reccomend Polder's chrome dryer)

It sounds like a hassle to use this but I've done my research thoroughly on small washers and this was a good choice for me living in a small walk up apartment. I really didn't want to buy one that required plumbing since they are problematic to hook up, take apart and store, plus I'm sure my landlord would not allow that. When I do three loads here, it is equal to one load at the laundromat. I air dry it, so I end up saving money. I figure it will pay for itself in a few months.

Avanti Portable Small Washing Machine, Steel Review

The Avanti washer is wonderful.

I bought this washer because the apartment I moved my family into after my husband died had no hook-ups for our standard washer and dryer. But I have five children, so going to the community laundry facility was not a good option. We have a lot of dirty clothes on a daily basis, so I needed a way to wash clothes at home every day.

I researched the available portable washers and decided to take a chance on the Avanti mostly because it had the largest capacity. With so many children, I needed to be able to wash a full sized load. The Avanti fits our needs wonderfully. It's full capacity is about 2/3's a regular full sized load on a standard machine, but it's still a lot of clothes. I can wash about 8 pairs of children's jeans, or 15 children's shirts, or any combination thereof. And I don't hook it up to the sink. I went down to our local hardware store and spoke with a plumbing associate who helped me find the right connections to hook it up to the water supply from my toilet. That means I wash everything in cold water, but that's fine with me. Not having to move it around is worth it. I attached an extension onto the drain hose so mine drains directly into the toilet as well.

The drain hose comes pre-installed on the left side (as you are facing the front of it), but the machine is made with ports on either side, and you can switch it to whichever side works best for you. It's a little hard to unsnap it and reattach it to the other side, but it's doable. It has a built in slot for the drain to hook onto on both sides of the machine as well, for when it's not draining into the sink. But if you have it drain into your toilet as I do, you need to purchase a tight fitting extension and leave it on the hook because the drain must sit at the level of the hook, otherwise the tub will never fill. I hope that makes sense. It's a physics thing, not a mistake.

Attaching it to the toilet water supply was easy, but the water supply hoses it came with were not high enough quality to do this without leaks. I had to buy higher pressure and tighter fitting washing machine supply hoses that went on tighter. Since the hoses are the same ones a standard washer uses, they're easy to find at any hardware store. I purchased high quality flexible steel hoses. The ones it comes with are soft plastic ones, with plastic heads that would never screw on tightly enough to not leak.

The washer itself it fabulous. It cleans the clothes really well, and it spins them out enough that line drying is actually possible. It's what I do everyday. I put in a load every evening, and hang them to dry and in the morning put everything away. The washer has a built in lint trap that is a nice feature, and a built in softener dispenser. The detergent goes in a drawer through which the water runs, so the detergent is mixed with the water as the machine fills.

It comes with lots of different wash settings, including a special "Jeans" setting, that does two rinses and an extra fast spin cycle to really get the water out of them. The water has three levels, and there are extra rinse options, and many more, like "Soak", "Normal", "Delicates".

This machine makes washing at home for a large family a reality. It's actually big enough to wash family sized loads, and it does a great job doing it. If you have a smaller family, this machine would more than meet your needs.

One last note, I find it cute that when a load is finished the machine chimes out the tune "Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee". Perfect, because I really am joyful to have such a great appliance when I thought I was doomed to spending every Saturday at the laundry mat!

LG Washers Front Load Washer With Rear Controls, 4.0 Cu. Ft. - White - WM0642HW Review

This washer is just phenomenal! It cleans VERY well, even in my hard well water. It's very quiet, only producing what some may deem objectionable amounts of noise during the spin cycle, which operates at an incredible 1200 RPM to extract every last bit of moisture possible out of the clothes before you get them out of the washer, which makes your drying of the clothes far more efficient, as the drying time is shortened so much. I've noticed a significant savings in gas usage (drying and hot water) since purchasing this machine.

The machine has to be EXTREMELY level, easy to take care of if you use eight (yes, EIGHT) little levels. Each corner has two sides, so it's easiest to level the machine with one on each side of each corner. You can find cheap ones at the dollar store or bargain bins that work just fine for this purpose.

This washer will wash an overstuffed King-sized down comforter easily. I can even fit the cover in with it.

It has many features, including on-board water heater (essential when dealing with as little water as these machines use, to keep the temperature up), "sanitary" (super-hot water) cycle, pre-wash, and many others. You can even set up custom programs.

The minor gripes: Pre-wash cycle has to have powder put in the compartments, as liquid just drains right into the washer. Cycle times are longer than a top-loader, but the capacity of this thing makes up for that...it's just another of the things to get used to vs. a top-loader. The "cute chime" signalling finished laundry is too quiet to hear on any floor but the one the washer's on. No biggie - the estimated time to finish is usually dead-on unless you get an unbalanced load, which doesn't happen often. Less often, in fact, than my old top-loader.

To ALL who experience problems with smell: LEAVE THE DOOR OPEN BETWEEN USES! This is stated very clearly in the owner's manual. I've NEVER had a problem with mildew odor, and I simply leave the door open every time. It's just one of those things to get used to with a front-loader vs. a top-loader.

Also, the torque this thing puts out may strain a floor that isn't specially reinforced to handle the power of this machine, so it's recommended only on cement (I have carpeted cement where mine is located) or specially reinforced flooring. Many people would do well to make note that this is NOT a conventional top-loader!

A reminder: front-loaders require H.e. detergent, or a VERY SMALL amount of regular. H.e. compatible detergents like that one "Signature" Powder work just fine.

All in all, I love this machine! (I can't believe I'm saying that about a laundry machine...)

I estimate that I have used this washer for 4 loads each week since buying from J&R in early October, 2006.I live in a studio in New York and bought this one because (1) it has a sink adapter, which the front-loading 14.3-lb model didn't seem to include and (2) at 17.5 inches wide/deep, it fit through my bathroom door, which the front-loading 14.3-lb model (at 20.5 inches wide) wouldn't.

Out of the box, you have to install an included metal pan at the bottom.Install it so that it is convex: there's a reason that the legs are so high.One of the problems I had during installation was that one of the screws holding this metal pan to the body comes very close to a clamp holding the gooseneck drain tube as it exits the body.The clamp had fallen out of position, and the end of the screw is close to where the clamp goes.I don't think I was ever in danger of puncturing the drainage tube, but it's something to watch out for.

You need a place to hang the drainage tube, between 31.5 and 40 inches high.The machine cannot fill the tub with water to a height above the maximum height of the drainage path.

On my first two loads, I made a puddle of water on the ground.There were two reasons for this: the first time, the water supply hose was not tightened sufficiently at the machine end, and water dribbled out and behind the machine until I figured out what was going on.With that tightened (I used a wrench), there was no leak.On my second load, I put in too many clothes (more about that later) and there was a water-resistant nylon jacket on top.Just before the very first spin cycle, some water was cupped on that jacket and did not drain out with the wash water.When the tub started to spin, that water came out.I never loaded that many clothes into the washer again, and haven't had any spills since.

During a normal wash cycle, the machine does the following steps three times: fill, agitate, agitate, drain, spin, drain, spin, drain, spin.The second and third iterations are called the "rinse" cycle.Often, the water out of the drain is still bubbly after the second spin. (I use a quarter capful or less of All no-fragrance 3x liquid concentrate.) So, I run another rinse cycle.If the machine detects an unbalance condition during a spin, it will stop, fill the tub with water, and agitate in an attempt to redistribute the clothes before draining and spinning again.I think the machine does this two or three times before giving up and beeping ten times to alert the user of the unbalance condition.

During the agitation process, this machine tends to intertwine long or extended parts of clothing --- shirt sleeves and socks --- into braid-like knots, which often trigger the unbalance condition during the subsequent spin.For example, when I wash four or five long-sleeved shirts together, I always have to untie and separate two or three of the shirts where the sleeves have been twisted together.I think good washing is where the wash water can touch every surface of the clothes, and being tied together prevents this.These problems probably would not happen with a front-loading washing machine.

What is the capacity of this washer?Well, I would say:

2 bath towels; or
2 pairs of jeans or pants; or
2 sweatshirts and 1 pair of sweat pants; or
4 long-sleeved oxford shirts; or
6 small-size undershirts; or
8-12 medium-size boxer underwear.

That's at the "high" water level.You may be able to load more than that, but I think the clothes won't get as clean, and the machine will probably reach more unbalance situations.

I once tried to wash a terrycloth robe.The robe fit in the tub, but the machine always got to an unbalance condition when it tried to spin.I think it's sort of like trying to run a centrifuge with only one tube.Sometimes after the spin cycle I find a sock or a shirt stretched across the middle of the tub, instead of having been thrown centrifugally against the tub walls.

Using my DSC-P71 digital camera in the multi-burst 30 frames-per-second mode and a light and a dark shirt in the washer, I estimate the initial spin at 450 rpm (light shirt passed once every 4 frames) and a final spin at 780 rpm (light shirt passed about 6.5 times in 0.5 seconds - about once every other frame).If I hang the clothes in my studio (not in the bathroom), then they dry in about one day or less, depending on the humidity.It takes much longer if I hang them in the bathroom.

Update (November 2007): This machine is still running.After a year, here are my comments:

After getting tired of the drain tube clamp falling out, I made two small wedges out of a folded-up credit card to hold the clamp in place.

I made a third spill (and this one was a big one): once, the gooseneck drain hose came apart from the U-shaped drain-pipe hook.So, now I check that connection every week or so.

I always run an extra rinse cycle (or two).If I have time, during the spin cycles, I lower the drain tube to allow more sudsy water to drain out.(This is a high-maintenance tactic, though --- it can lead to floods if you're not careful.)Some types of clothes absorb and retain more water (and detergent) than others, and my skin is better after more of the detergent is rinsed out.You can take just-washed clothes from a standard washing machine and re-rinse them here to check how much detergent is left.

Update (April 2008): In the past two months, I have had two more major spills.Both times, it seems that the water-level sensor got stuck and failed to tell the inlet valve to shut off.When this happens, the water overflows the tub and comes out the bottom of the machine.(Usually, you hear a click when the water level is reached, and then the valve shuts off; but in these cases, the first click never occurs.)

Now that I live in an apartment building with a good laundry room, I use this washer mostly for small items: socks, underwear, undershirts.

Update (April 2009): It turned out that the water-level sensor had failed.The sign of impending failure is that the sensor will sometimes fail to close the valve when set to "high", but will always close at "low" and "medium" water levels.Then, "medium" will stop working and the valve will only close when the water level is set to "low".Since the manufacturer's warranty had expired, I had the part replaced under my credit-card-based extended warranty program.Haier suggested two authorized repair operators; one of them said that they didn't service this model.The other did, and charged $85 (diagnostic service call) plus $60 (labor) plus $21.52 (part).The part had to be ordered and took about five weeks (!) to arrive.

Best washer I've ever used, hands down.

This washer gets my clothes cleaner the first time, is gentler on them, and uses less water and energy.I've found several of the other features extremely useful as well.The sanitary cycle actually came in very handy a couple times, such as when the toilet flooded and got all the towels wet.The very high spin speed really does extract almost all of the water from most loads, coming out nearly dry means less drying time (less energy and much gentler on the clothes.) and quicker turnaround on getting laundry done.

Ours gets used fairly heavily (5 to 6 full loads a week generally as a minimum), which doesn't sound like much, but this washer's capacity is so huge that that translates to probably 10 to 12 loads in a normal top-loader, probably closer to 16 or 18 in a standard laundromat size.

Haier HLP23E Electronic 1-1/2-Cubic-Foot Touch Pulsator Top-Loading Portable Washing Machine Review

So, I bought this washer about a month ago and I have to say that even though I was so excited to be doing laundry in my apartment, I found this washer not as convenient as I would have liked, considering that I had to babysit it.

Here is my list of pros:
1)You can do laundry in your own home! As a New Yorker I can not overstate the convenience of this. I would write more about this but since this is the reason I bought it...
2)It fit about 10-12 items in it. This included pants, skirts, underwear and shirts. I mixed it up.
3)The control panel is real nice. smooth even.
4)Even without the muffler,it's an okay volume (see below).

Here is my list of cons:
1)It arrived dented. Not only were the thingees that were supposed to connect it to the sink dented but so far I have not been able to attach the bottom sound muffler plastic plate because the body of the washer is too dented to do that.
2)I have to babysit it. I know I already mentioned that but here are the deets: it would do a wash cycle and then tell me that there wasn't enough water coming through the sink. How much water do you need, little fella? The sink was turned all the way on and streaming away so maybe consider hooking it up to a fire hydrant? Waterfall?
3)The metal widget to adapt to the sink (even if it had been undented) was well, unique. They give you these rubber washers which are supposed to make things connect to your sink. These washers may work for others. For me? Nyet. So I went to the hardware store, with my washer, consulted with the plumbing dept, and bought a different piece which I then installed to my sink (FYI, apparently in plumbing there are either big threads or small threads and the threads on my sink were the wrong kind).
4) The drainage tube should be hung lower than the faucet. I found this difficult and logistically if you have a small apartment a bucket might be a good idea because otherwise the spin cycle does not get all the water out unless the drainage tube is lower than the input tube.
5) No casters. It's on a furniture dolly because I wanted it to move around but I foolishly concluded that 'portable' and 'casters included' go together.
6)Terrible, I mean TERRIBLE instruction booklet. I rate the instruction booklet negative 65 stars.

I've only used my washer a few times so I'll update when I have more to say.
