LG : WM3431HS All-In-One Washer and Dryer TITANIUM Review

LG : WM3431HS All-In-One Washer and Dryer TITANIUMAfter some initial research into the matter, I found out that you would need a special hookup for either a washer or a dryer (you need both water input and a way to dispose of the dirty water without overflowing your pipes) and you need venting for the dryer. The majority of machines that were designed to perform in an apartment WITHOUT such a hookup had review after review complaining of poor cleaning, high energy usage, breaking down, noise, super small load capacities, and leakage. But further searching found this LG WM3431 Washer/Dryer with mostly positive reviews on the different websites. It was the answer to my prayers. (Note: Despite the negative reviews, you will NOT find a better washer/dryer combo that can operate in an apartment without venting).

The Pros
1. For apartments --It's one of only a few machines on the market that's designed to work in a small space without a traditional washer or dryer hookup. That means that the electric plug goes into any three-prong outlet in your house and the water input hose can be connected to your sink. The water outlet hose dispenses into any drain and does not dump a huge amount of water so as to overwhelm your sink or bath pipes. The dryer also doesn't need a hot air vent out a window or anything. Of the machines of this genre, I've found that the LG delivers superior performance.
2. Cleaner clothes while using less water. Also, the LG WM3431 has a sanitary cycle that cleans clothes with super hot water and has kept my whites gleaming.
3. Money --I calculated that at $1.50 per wash and $1.50 per dry, it would cost me $312 a year to do 2 small loads weekly and $468 a year to do 3 small loads weekly. The machine would pay for itself in two to three years. That's not to mention the prospect of resale and the time you save yourself from driving to the laundromat and sitting there waiting.
4. Aesthetic--the machine is beautiful.
5. Timer-- allows you to load your laundry and detergent before you leave for work and to have it start running and complete its cycle just in time for when you come home. The timer can be set for up to 19 hours later. And since this is an all-in-one machine, you obviously don't need to be home to switch the load from your washer to your dryer.
6. Protects clothing - I only found this out after going on vacation and using a regular washer and dryer for two weeks. Cheap clothes which I thought were better quality than they actually were, lost probably 1/4 their color during my vacation. I realized that the steam mechanism of the dryer, though it takes longer, is gentler on clothes than forced hot air. All my clothing has maintained the color and quality as on the day I bought it, using the LG washer/dryer combo. The Cons
1. Time --It takes anywhere from 3-5 hours to do an entire wash and dry, depending on the options you choose. The spin cycle can add a lot of extra time. Be mindful of how you load your laundry (i.e. Put one towel on the bottom, some clothes in between, and another towel on top.) If the machine is imbalanced, it will reset and reset and try to balance the load. I've found that if you use only the low spin cycle with the sheet and towel loads, the items will still get sufficiently dry, but the machine will start spinning a lot faster.
2. Vibration --Others have complained that the machine vibrates violently. I have never had this problem. The machine really does not move or jump at all, even if it's on the very high spin.
3. Capacity --I can fit a queen fitted sheet, duvet cover, and 4 pillowcases in there, though it's a bit snug. I probably do about 2-3 loads of clothing a week (for a family of 2 adults and 1 toddler), plus an additional load every other week for sheets, towels, and tablecloths. I wouldn't recommend this machine for a much larger family, but I think that there is a larger capacity model available from LG.
4. Noise --It's actually stealthily quiet during the wash and spin cycles, humming at no louder than your air conditioner. However, the mechanism the machine employs to expel water for your rinse cycles and throughout the long drying cycle is really very loud. Sounds as loud as a car (but maybe not a motorcycle) revving its engine very loudly.
5. WRINKLES!!--Another major problem is that the way the machine dries, using a condensation method rather than hot air, leaves clothing feeling sometimes damp and often wrinkled when taken out of the machine. My clothes always feels damp when taken immediately from the machine, but 95% of the time, when you spread out the laundry, the steam dissipates and the clothes are actually dry. (Sweaters, jeans, and large items may still be truly damp, unless you've run the machine for very long.) My solution to the wrinkle problem has been to cut my losses and bring extra large items (sheets, tablecloths, dresses, and whatever else MUST be wrinkle-free) down to the basement and just pay to dry it in a regular hot air dryer. My other loads have fared well in the wrinkle department so long as you fill the fabric softener tray to the MAX with fabric softener (I use a non-scented one for this reason) and if you take the clothes out of the dryer as soon as the dry cycle ends. (The dryer continues to run on a "cool-down" mode after it's finished drying, I guess in an attempt to prevent wrinkles, but it causes more wrinkles.)
6. Door Latch--It keeps the door locked and waits 1-2 minutes before releasing it if you stop the machine mid-cycle and after it's finished drying. So you have to actually wait to pull open the door. I've had instances where I just started the machine and noticed I dropped a sock on the ground and have had to pause the machine, wait 2 minutes, then open up the door and to throw the sock in.
7. Child Lock--The only thing that changes when you put the child lock on is that it disables the start/pause button and if you turn off the machine, you cannot turn it back on w/o disabling the child lock first. However, the power button still works and the child can turn the machine off in the first place. I cannot tell you how many times my toddler has run over to the washer and turned off my machine mid-cycle by pushing the oooooh! shiny blue colored power button. And I've had to restart the machine (but only after holding down and turning off the child lock) and have the washer begin at the start of the cycle where it left off. It takes extra time this way. And boy is it annoying.
You would think that the least the child lock would keep the door latch locked so that a child cannot climb inside the washer drum. Nope. If the machine is turned off or if it has just completed wash, the door latch will unlock automatically regardless of whether the child lock is on or off. Essentially, the child lock only disables one button on the entire machine. It's pretty much useless otherwise. I wish LG could improve upon this.
8. BIGGEST DRAWBACK: Because the WM3431 does not dry clothes using hot air, there is no lint trap. Then, where does the lint/hair go? Well, some of it you'll find accumulating in the rubber gasket around the door. But small amounts of it accumulate in the condenser tube/duct that is INSIDE the machine. You have to actually disassemble the machine to get to it. (Yes, this is a major design flaw.) If your machine starts taking longer and longer to dryer (even longer than 3 hours) or doesn't dry altogether, this could be the problem. If you're brave of heart, you can disassemble the top and back covers of the machine and find the white plastic duct. Inside, you'll probably find a mass of lint/hair that's blocking the air from getting to the tub and not letting your clothes dry. Once removed, your machine will work like new. You may not want to disassemble the washer/dryer, though, as it could void a warranty. But some servicemen have said that it is a flaw in this model and recommends clearing these ducts once a year. I have had the WM3431 for 2.5 years now, and only now did I have to pull it open and clear the lint. Other ppl may have to do it more often if they have clothes that give off more lint or if they have pets that shed hair. Annoying? Definitely yes. But thank goodness, we got the free extended warranty and a serviceman cleared ducts for us. I watched him and it really wouldn't be too hard to do it myself, but, yes, it would have been better not to have to do it at all.

Bottom Line:
If you can possibly buy the traditional separate washer and dryer units, by all means, do so! But if you live in a place where there's no traditional washer/dryer hook-up available, and you're looking to buy, the LG WM3431 is the best choice on the market (ESP. over the Haier models which constantly break down). Just remember to purchase a (full coverage) extended warranty agreement and keep in mind some of my tips above. Good luck!

Whirlpool WFW9150WW Duet 4.0 cu. ft. Capacity Front Load Washer (White) Review

Whirlpool WFW9150WW Duet 4.0 cu. ft. Capacity Front Load WasherI just had a Whirlpool front-loader washing machine delivered last week that has yet to wash a load of clothes. It is defective with such wiring and motor problems that the technician sent to fix it said the machine should never have passed inspection. Whirlpool has agreed to pay for the parts to fix the machine, when the parts are no longer backordered. I want to return the machine because I have no guarantee something else won't go wrong as soon as they fix this problem. Whoever heard of buying an expensive brand new washing machine that doesn't work? I hate Whirlpool and will never in my entire life buy another Whirlpool or Maytag product. EVER! I highly recommend you buy another brand of washing machine. I sure wish I had.

Equator EZ3720CEE 14-Pound Combo Ventless Condensing Washer Dryer Review

Equator EZ3720CEE 14-Pound Combo Ventless Condensing Washer DryerThe model Equator Combo Washer Dryer that I bought in 1999 was great. Not a single service call or problem. When a problem came up during a kitchen remodelling, I could not find anyone who would repair it. Unlike Sears, there were no repair services in my area for at least a year.

So, I replaced it in 2008, but the new machine design had been remodeled (by the offshore assembly plant, I believe)and the machine has been a headache. Each service call requires two half days lost from work, one for diagnosis, one for repair.

The motor wiring pulled loose during a spin cycle, the motor has been replaced, the filter-pump (fump) has been replaced, the belt has jumped off the wheel, the drying timer interferes with the wash timer-- and I've only had the machine for about 18 months. The EZ3700 CEE has been a huge expense and headache.

Before you buy check two things: call the "authorized" service organization and see if they actually service the machine. Then, take out the longest and most comprehensive extended warrenty you can get.

WFW9550WW 4.4 Cu. Ft. Capacity Steam Washer Mercury in White Review

WFW9550WW 4.4 Cu. Ft. Capacity Steam Washer Mercury in WhiteAll I can say about Whirlpool's "technology marvels" is beware of the repair cost on these electronically controlled machines. I bought the top end front loader less than 3 years ago. It recently went on the blink requiring a service call. The diagnosis? The computer controller was burnt requiring a $300 repair. One month later a front panel board also burnt requiring another $300 repair. So in less than 3 years I have spent $600 to repair a $1000 machine. When you consider a purchase consider adding the "overly expensive" extended warranty, or better yet, just buy a basic "no frills" washer. Whirlpools technology leaves much to be desired and as we know, the shorter the life span, the more units they will sell. Never again Whirlpool! BTW, the repairman mentoned that most of his calls are for the newer type machines.

Maytag : MEDE300VW 27in Electric Dryer 7 cu. ft. Capacity - White Review

Maytag : MEDE300VW 27in Electric Dryer 7 cu. ft. Capacity - WhiteI am thrilled with my new Maytag dryer. The drum is huge and holds a ton of laundry. The settings are easy to use. It also has a lint light to remind you to clean your lint filter before each drying session. It is fairly quiet when in operation & has the buzzer setting to notify you when clothes are ready. I love my dryer & thought the price through Amazon was very fair, especially for the brand name, Maytag.
This was the first experience I have had with purchasing appliances online. Although it took a bit longer for the delivery (approximately 3 weeks)it was worth the savings in sales tax & the shipping was free. The conveinence was fabulous! I think I'll buy my next appliance online as well!

Whirlpool : WTW57ESVW 27in Top-Load Washer with 3.5 cu. ft. Capacity White Review

Whirlpool : WTW57ESVW 27in Top-Load Washer with 3.5 cu. ft. Capacity WhiteWhirlpool usually makes good products, but this one has problems. We installed the first one, it broke down after 4 days.Got the second one in, it broke down in about the same timeframe.Got the third one in, it lasted for one and a half loads.Had a repairman come this time to find out what the problem was.Turns out we have either too low or too high water pressure. The automatic load sensing mechanism burns up in either case. Why didn't they put a regulator on the water line if they knew it would do this???

Also, the automatic load sensing does not work on small loads - the washer just fills up to the top.I would not recommend this model - save yourself some money and headaches and get a more basic (and more reliable) model. In this case, the added features mean added opportunity for failure.

Whirlpool Cabrio Series: WTW6600S 28" Top-Load Washer with 4.5 Cu. Ft. Capacity, 11 Cycles and Dire Review

Whirlpool Cabrio Series: WTW6600S 28' Top-Load Washer with 4.5 Cu. Ft. Capacity, 11 Cycles and DireDo not waste your money on a Whirlpool Cabrio. I purchased one Feb. 2007. Bought the set. Paid $950 for the washer and $700 for the dryer. Six months after I purchased the set, I had to get a brand new washer because the first one quit working. October 2008, it began flashing the F51 code. Had to get new motorboard. Two months later, the F1 code began. Now it needed a new control board. Now whirlpool did pay for all of this, not without complaining first. Now March 2010, it is flashing the LD code. I have taken the machine apart, checked all parts, hoses, pumps, ect. Everything is clear and it still wont drain the water from the tub. I have called Whirlpool to complain about my 3 yr old machine, that has been serviced every year since I bought it. They were very rude. At first, they said there was nothing they could do and I would have to pay for everything. Then they said, they could cover parts. But its $100 just have a diagnostic test done!!! So unless you like to have service men at your house once a year or more and you like rude customer service who really dont want to help you out!!!! DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS MACHINE!!!

Speed Queen 3.3 Cu Ft Front Load Front Control Washer AFN50FS Review

Speed Queen 3.3 Cu Ft Front Load Front Control Washer AFN50FSI have been an owner of this unit for just over 12 months and I have never had such a terrible experience with any other washer.I could handle the $1,500+ investment on this thing if it operated like a $1,500 machine.....However, there is nothing you can do to get a load balanced in this thing and when the washer goes into the spin cycle it sounds like a jet plane taking off - THEN the rattling starts - the panels that make up the housing rattle and one or more components inside the unit rattle making this a true BEAST at full operating speed (our 2 dogs run for the hills with their tails between their legs.)If you buy this thing you better place it in your garage or in another building or plan on doing laundry while you're away from home as you will not rest while this thing is running!

I would go into the details about how loose change that accidently finds its way into the machine will clog the discharge pump, but that is another story and that fix is not covered under warranty!

Frigidaire : FTF2140FS 27in Front-Load Washer - White Review

Frigidaire : FTF2140FS 27in Front-Load Washer - WhiteWhen looking to replace my washing machine, I started out looking at the traditional top loaders. The cheap ones were around $300 and more standard quality ones around $400, and I saw some that were another $100 or more beyond that. When the salesman asked me about front load washers, I didn't give it much thought because they tend to be more pricey and out of my range. In fact, the first one he showed me was about $700.When I asked him what the cheaper ones cost, he showed me the Frigidaire FTF2140FS for $550, and seeing as they had $100 off deal, it was only slightly more than the standard top loader. So I took him up on the deal, ultimately paying $475 after tax, and so far I'm very happy with its performance.

I usually have two or three people who rent rooms in my house. The old washer took 40 gallons of water per load. The Frigidaire takes just 15 gallons! So right off the bat I'm going to be saving a lot on my water bill, as well as a few bucks on electricity as this washer takes less of that to operate, too.

The controls are pretty simple to figure out.Ten cycles, four temperature settings, you can set how fast you want the basket to spin, and there's a few extra options, too.Shut the door, hit start, and let it go.Just be sure to remember that you must use HE (High Efficiency) detergent.

The wash is very quiet and the spin dry sucks the water right out of the clothes.I can dry my stuff in half the time!

I did encounter one problem twice. When washing my bed sheets and blankets, I heard a beeping noise. The washer was stopped and I thought it was done, but it turns out my sheets were still soaked.I looked at the manual and apparently if the load in the washer basket becomes uneven, it won't spin (that's why it was beeping). So I just pushed the blankets a few times, shut the door, and on the cycle dial there's an option for Final Spin, which is just that, the final spin dry.So I selected that, hit start, and it worked both times.I haven't had that problem with any other load of laundry before or after that.

This was my first foray into the world of front load washers and so far I'm very pleased with the results! It's quiet, efficient, my clothes are clean and smell fresh, and most important of all to me, it isn't tearing my clothes like my old washer was.And for the price I got it at, it's a great value!

Samsung : WF448AAP 4.5 cu. ft. Steam Front Load Washer - Stainless Platinum Review

Samsung : WF448AAP 4.5 cu. ft. Steam Front Load Washer - Stainless PlatinumWe purchased the matching dryer to go with this washer and they are fantastic! They are quiet, fast, and energy efficient. We purchased the drawer bases which give you more storage and raise the machines up waist level so you don't have to bend down when loading and unloading.

The only issue we had was with the brass "Y" included with the steam dryer for the cold water faucet. It leaked, but Samsung sent a replacement the next day!

We gave away an 8 year old set of Maytags that worked, but were both noisy...good ridence! These are so quiet and do a better job cleaning and drying our clothes than any set we have owned before. We have had GE, Kenmore, and Maytag. All good products, but these Samsung products are so far superior, it isn't even funny!

And don't let the "NASA" designed controls fool you, they are very easy to use with preprogrammed settings (e.g. whites, towels, perm press, etc.).And the steam in both the washer and dryer allow you to remove wrinkles and sanitize your clothes. This washer also has the ability to remove 99% of bacteria in cold water using silver ions.

Don't let our 5 star rating and the other person's 1 star rating make up your mind.We researched Consumer Reports and other web sites and read lots of consumer opinions before making our decision.Plus you get an energy credit on your taxes for purchasing these Samsung products!

One recommendation, purchase the extended warranty as these are high tech with digital controls.Ours are protected for 5 years along with a "lemon" warranty. If the other consumer who gave 1 star had purchased this, they could have already replaced the defective unit or got their money back.Although we are suspicious seeing that Samsung give a 1 year warranty and they claim they can't get Samsung to do anything about their washer...so do your research before writing off this product. We highly recommend this washer although it was the most expensive one we researched...worth every dollar!

Whirlpool WHIRLPOOL 8574963 WASHER/DRYER CONTROL KNOB ASSEMBLY Review

Whirlpool WHIRLPOOL 8574963 WASHER/DRYER CONTROL KNOB ASSEMBLYThe item itself is great. You just snap it in place and that's it. I have no problem with it since I purchased it in May of last year. I bought this knob to replace the original knob on my Whirlpool front load washer. Unfortunately, now it's my dryer knob that needs replacing. It's just sad that Whirlpool made crappy knobs for a very expensive washer and dryer. Anyway, I would have given it 5 stars. However, for a small plastic knob, it cost a lot especially the ridiculous shipping and handling charges. It is less than 13 ounces. The replacement knob I bought at [...] last year cost [...] plus [...] shipping and handling fee that totaled to [...]. Now, they're selling it for [...] with the same shipping and handling fee that totals to [...]!!!! Imagine how much it'll cost next year. Overall, I would recommend buying this replacement knob to Whirlpool washer and dryer owners. Make sure you buy 2 as the prices go up every year.

LG : WM2601HR 27in Front-Load Washer with 4.5 cu. ft. Capacity Wild Cherry Red Review

LG : WM2601HR 27in Front-Load Washer with 4.5 cu. ft. Capacity Wild Cherry RedFront load washers and dryers require a PEDESTAL to raise
the loading door to a comfortable height unless you want
to be on your knees to load the machine.

LG manufactures PEDESTALS for their machines, however
they do not warrant them!If the PEDESTAL collapses or
the DRAWER doesn't close or stay shut, LG will not fix it
or replace it.They say the PEDESTALis an accessory!
A cheap plastic piece holds the DRAWERS shut, and LG
would not even help on this problem.

For this reason,I will never buy another LG product of
any kind!

Samsung Washer With Front Load Steam 1200 RPM 4.3 Cu Ft VRT. - White With Chrome Trim Review

Samsung Washer With Front Load Steam 1200 RPM 4.3 Cu Ft VRT. - White With Chrome TrimI picked one of these up a couple of weeks ago and have turned into a laundry geek. I went from a top loader to this and have been amazed at how much: less water and soap it uses, longer it takes to run, less lint comes off the clothes in the dryer (gentle), cleaner the clothes are, active care (formerly known as silver care) works.
Don't expect to see your clothes sloshing around in water on this or any front loader I have seen. The first time I wondered if it was working as you can't see water. The clothes do get wet, and even better, very clean. I have cut back on the detergent I put in as anything near what the detergent maker says to put in leaves to clothes feeling soapy. Makes sense though, less water would need less detergent.
It does take a while to run, around an hour for the normal cycle, a bit over an hour if you say "heavy" on the soil. When I say run, this thing goes through cycles slowly. I don't watch it all the time but sometimes it is sitting, then spins, then sits. Whatever, it works. There are some quicker settings if you really need to rush it, though I haven't tried them.
There is very little lint in the dryer lint trap with this washer which I assume means it is taking it easy on the fabric, not breaking it down. I would say it is probably 15-20% of the lint as before (an 80-85% reduction). I have asked other front load owners if they had the same experience and they all seemed to have to think about it but said, yes, less lint.
As far as the cleanliness of the clothes, this thing does the job. My whites weren't looking so white before but are coming back around. The active care which uses silver ions to disinfect the clothes does a great job. I do Bikram Yoga, 90 minutes in a hot room, and sweat like crazy. Hot water shrinks the towels and my clothes too much to use so active care to the rescue. It really does take the odor out while using warm or cold water (though living in Arizona the "cold" water isn't all that cold).
There is a learning curve with this, one that I haven't completed. You can adjust the water temp for washing and for rinsing, the speed of the spin cycle, extra rinse, extra wash, etc. I didn't have a real fancy top loader so this is all new and great for me. Also, it does take a few seconds as it goes into the spin cycle to balance. During these 2-3 seconds it can seem it is going to be out of balance but it figures it out and smooths out.
I'm very satisfied with the washer. I don't have the matching dryer so can't speak to that. Also, two weeks of ownership I have no idea what the quality is. The delivery guy said that Samsung has seemed to do well with the front loaders, then went on to name some other brands that seemed to be trouble. Time will tell. The electronics worry me some but we'll see.

Samsung : WF328AAR 4.0 cu. ft. Front Load Washer - Tango Red Review

Samsung : WF328AAR 4.0 cu. ft. Front Load Washer - Tango RedI have had this washer for almost a year and a half and i'm completely in love with it.The capacity is absolutely amazing. You can pack it to the brim and it will clean everything thoroughly. I don't even pretreat stains anymore. The matching dryer is equally amazing as it will dry everything perfectly in no time.We bought the set knowing we would have to stack them (yes they are stackable if you buy the stacking kit) and we got the pedestals for free but we unfortunately had to store those under a bed until we moved. The high spin barely makes any noise and it does NOT walk across the floor like some of the other brands. The vibration reduction system works beautifully. In fact, when the spin cycle just starts you can see a little wiggle if you watch it but then it smooths out and your clothes come out with practically no water in them. I also absolutely love the silver care feature. This allows me to sanitize the washcloths that i use on my face without using a whole tank of hot water. It simply passes the water over silver plates to clean out the bacteria.I also love the delay start feature. If i don't want to wait up on a load to put it in the dryer i can just set it so that it will go off a couple hours before i wake up.That way the clothes don't set in the washer wet all night and smell musty in the morning.

I can't say enough good things about this washer. In fact, if my washer broke today i would buy it all over again. I've enjoyed using it so much.

Haier HLP140E 2-3/5-Cubic-Foot Compact Tumble Vented Dryer Review

Haier HLP140E 2-3/5-Cubic-Foot Compact Tumble Vented DryerI have only had this dryer for about 10 days now, but I'm very happy with it! There is one other review for this dryer and in it they say it takes a long time for the clothes to dry... this is true. But I think it's to be expected since this dryer can simply be plugged into any outlet unlike a normal dryer. So, smaller dryer... less power... longer drying time. The reason I'm giving this unit 5 stars is because if getting out the laundry mat is as important to you as it was to me, then the extra drying time is more than acceptable. Also, this dryer is VERY QUITE, simple to use and set up. For the first 5 loads I just had the machine sitting on the floor near a window - I didn't even have the hose out the window. It did get my apartment a little warm and humid (not since I've put the hose out the window of course), but I'm just making the point that it is very easy to set up.

How long does it take to dry clothes? I'm still trying to get all the drying times down myself. But I'm having much better luck using the timed dry instead of the auto dry. On auto drying it does seem to take hours before it finally stops. So I've just started to try and figure how long certain things dry. For example, my sheets (fitted bottom and the top sheet) I'm drying now between 60 or 90 minutes. On both times the sheets are close to dry and hanging them up for a little longer is enough. I guess this review is a little premature since I don't have the dry times down yet. But I have the feeling 90 minutes will dry most stuff about 90 percent.

I think once I make the adjustment and get things organized drying will not be a hassle at all. And for me the extra fiddling I have to do while drying in my apartment is so much better than having the hassle oforganizing taking everything out of apartment, waiting, digging up quarters, using a machine that has been used 10,0000 times instead my nice new machine.

UPDATE! THE SOLUTION! March 18, 2009

I have owned now the Haier Washer and Haier Dryer now for 5 months and I still am incredibly happy with my purchase. Even with the very long drying times with the dryer I love not having to go down to the W&Ds in the apartments laundry room.

But there is a solution to the long drying time with the dryer: Not long after posting my review C. Mok posted this comment (note: the spin dryer is very small 24 inches high, 14 inches in diameter - $134.00 + shipping - and only one company seems to sell them in the US):

C. Mok says:
May I suggest complementing your electric dryer with a small spin dryer? I bought a spin dryer on a whim when I remembered those were the only things used in Asia when I was there during the 80s. It has worked really well along side my small portable washer in my small apt. I hang dry most of my laundry except when I'm in a hurry. The spin dryer cuts drying time in half easily. Most spin cycle on washers go about maybe 600 - 800 rpm. The little spin dryer spins at 3000rpm. On a small wash (2 bath towels) it can spin out over a quart of water (over 32fl oz) in less than 2 minutes. That is a significant amount of water to evaporate using normal dryers. This will shorten your drying time and also save your clothes from heat damage from the prolong drying times. The only catch is trying to balance the load in the small spin dryer. I find it easiest to load all the heavy cotton clothes on the bottom and the lighter synthetic clothes on the top. Then give it a good shove and compress everything tightly down. Thats has worked really well for me. Check out [...]for a small spin dryer. Good luck!

I finally bought the spin dryer to work with my Haier dryer about a month ago and now washing and drying is very similar to using normal sized machines. Now there is just a very short middle step. I'll give examples of some of the basic loads I do each week.

Whites (socks 10-12 pair, underwear 10-12 pair, t-shirts 2-4):

After using the washing machine I put all clothes in the spin dryer. It is important to pack the spin dryer the way the manual suggests to prevent the dryer from bouncing around like R2-D2 in a bad mood. With small items like socks and underwear though, it's pretty easy, and after experience you will see what you can just drop and press in the SD (spin dryer)and what you need to wrap around. I does sound like this middle step is a pain, but after you use it a bunch of times, it's pretty easy and you don't give it a second thought. When you turn the SD on, it starts to spin, shakes a bit, then settles down and gets very quiet as it picks up speed. When you first use the spin dryer, you think, wow, i got ripped off! No water is coming out!.... But wait... after about 30 seconds water starts flow out. Dribblyat first but then... wow! With a full load, CUPS of water fill your water catcher. I have had between 1 and 5 cups of water (normally 2-3), depending on what I was washing. Once the water flow starts to slow down, you turn off the machine. It only takes 2-3 minutes.

I then take my clothes and put then in the Haier dryer and set the timer to 90 minutes. After 90 minutes the clothes are BONE DRY. I'm not sure how long it actually takes, but if the load is a little smaller there is a very good chance they will be dry after only 1 hour.

Darks: 2 pairs of pants, 6-8 T-shirts, 1 sweat shirt. In the SD, you do now need to put the pants in first, wrapped into the bottom of the machine, then the sweat shirt, then the shirts. Again, after 90 minutes - bone dry (as I said, they are probably done after 70 min? 80 min? I'm not sure because I just open it after the buzzer goes off.

Sheets (king size): OK, sheets are the only thing that I wash that can be slightly problematic. Because these are large items, they can make R2-D2 (the spin dryer) unhappy. You have to be the most careful here wrapping them into the spin dryer. In the Haier Dryer also, they can at times ball up. I normally wash 2-3 sheets at a time. Put them all in the spin dryer at once, then in the Haier dryer for 60 minutes EACH. I found that they don't ball up when you dry them separately. So yes, it would still take you 2 hours to dry 2 sheets.

The Washer and dryer are freakishly quite, but the Spin Dryer does have a lot of vibration at the beginning and end of it's 2-3 minute spin. Not a big deal because of the short time, but if you have thin floors and a neighbor under you, they might wonder what is going up every 45 minutes for 3 minutes while you are doing laundry. I suggest getting 1 or 2 thick squares of carpet.

UPDATE July 6th, 2009

I did just read the comment from someone who had problems ordering a spin dryer. I can't speak for that company other than mine arrived on time and in good shape and still works like new. I did go to the BBBlink and did only see 1 complaint about the company.

For reasons I don't understand, I was only ever able to find 1 company in the US that sells a spin dryer. Maybe some enterprising individual might think of importing some from a country that uses them more and start a business selling them. I had a friend who told me that they are pretty common in Europe. (Note: I do remember I had to wait a month to order a spin dryer from the Laundry Alternative because they were out of stock. I'm not vouching for the company - just giving my personal experience.

November 6, 2009 UPDATE

I was curious to see how long I've had my washer and dryer to calculate how much I've saved in quarters (13 months x $20 = $260). It's been over a year so I thought I'd add a first year update. The washer, dryer, and spin dryer all work like new. Which is great, I'm not sure if I'm lucky or not, but in my case they are fine. I did make the decision not to use bleach early on. I'm not sure if that has made any difference.

As far as drying. I reread my review and while it is true, if you use the spin dryer before the Haier dryer your wash will be bone dry in 90 minutes, that is with a small-med load. If you fill the dryer to the max. It will take 2-2.5 hours to dry. I just make sure to do medium loads more often.

My mom told me a secret to drying sheets! I still dry one sheet at a time for 90 minutes, but my mom said, AND SHE WAS RIGHT, if you put in a DRY towel (I use a big one) the sheet does not ball up while it spins. This has made a big difference in drying sheets, which are a pain to dry. I also bought a retractable clothesline from amazon. So when I dry sheets, (I don't use the spin dryer for sheets because the sheets are so big they can make the spin dryer go out of balance), I hang one on he clothes line, and they dry 1 for 90 minutes. Then I take the one out of the dryer and put it on the clothes line and put the one one from the clothes line in the dryer. Sometimes I have to put a sheet in for another 30 minutes.

Also, you really do need pull out and clean out the filter after every load. It really makes the drying time MUCH faster because it allows the air to flow out of the machine. You have to clean the lint off the "catch" and also the black filter thingy. Someone posted that an improvement on removing the filter would make the dryer a lot better. I totally agree with that.

The bottom line is: It depends on your personality; which do you dislike more? Digging up quarters, piling up your soap on your clothes in a basket and making a bunch of trips to the laundry room once a week or setting up these crazy contraptions in your apartment and turning your laundry doing into an art form where you have to get creative and be a little unorthodox.

Koblenz Portable Washer Review

Koblenz Portable WasherPros:

This unit, which uses an impeller rather than a central agitator, holds more clothes than you'd guess. It's difficult to gauge its size because there is no frame of reference in the photo, so I surprised it was large enough to hold a decent sized load of clothes, or, in one load, a king sized set of sheets. Also, the unit is monkey-simple to use.

Cons:

Boy, where to start. The unit is simply more trouble than it's worth. By the time you adapt your washing routine to accommodate its shortcomings, you've rendered the convenience, inconvenient. Just a few of the limitations:

1. It has a very short drain hose, less than 3 feet. Since there is no spin cycle, the unit relies on gravity to empty. This means you must lay the drain hose down to drain. The hose rests upright against the back, on a hook, during use, and you lift it off the hoke and lay it down to drain, against the ground. Consequently, forget about draining this into the bathtub or a sink, as it is neither long enough, nor will provide the necessity gravity, to drain up and over the side of a tub or sink. To get around this, I picked up the unit and literally placed it in my tub, and filled it with water and washed clothes in it while it sat IN the tub enclosure, so that I could lay the very short drain hose down in the tub's drain when I was finished. Which led to limitation no. 2.

2. It has a very short electrical cord. This cord is very short, so, because I had to set the unit in my tub enclosure to wash, it wasn't long enough to also reach the electrical outlet only 6 feet away. A grounded 3 print extension cord was required.

3. The cavity / wash tub of this unit is surprisingly large, so it holds more clothes than you think. This may seem like a pro, however, think about manually filling it with water. There are no hookups required, so you manually pour water into it. This may also seem like a pro, but it actually isn't. For me to wash a MEDIUM sized load of clothes, it took five sloshing full buckets of hot water. Now, think about the time involved in filling five buckets of water from the faucet, and carrying pouring it into the wash tub. I started with a pitcher of water and realized, geez, I'll be at this all day, and switched to buckets.

4. The cycle is 15 minutes long. This is barely enough time for an underpowered washer to get clothes clean. It's fine for lingerie and hand washables, but for anything heavy, you'll want to do two cycles, at least.

5. It says to use 2 tablespoons of detergent, but you'll need much more. Low sudsing is recommended, but I used the same amount I'd use on any other load. Remember, you've just added 5 buckets of water. 2 tablespoons of detergent did NOT get my clothes clean.

6. Once you've laid the hose down and drained the 5 buckets of now dirty water, you'll need to repeat the process and fill it up again with 5 buckets of clean water, and run a 15 minute cycle to rinse the clothes, and then gravity drain again.

7. Because there is no spin cycle, the clothes will be sopping wet, as if they sat in a 5 bucket container of water. Which they did. Hand wringing is required, with a period of drip drying before they'd be ready for a standard dryer. If you use a line, no problem, but they will be sopping. Thus, you wouldn't want to wash heavy towels or jeans in this machine.

8. The force of the wash cycle is surprisingly strong on small loads. The impeller spins the water into a gentle whirlpool effect, swirling your clothes one direction, pausing, and then the other direction. This back-and-forth motion continues for the entire 15 minute cycle. Now, when the load is pretty small, the force of the whirlpool was really pretty decent. However, on a medium and full load, the force just disappeared completely. That's a lot of water to move around, and when you get to 6 or 7 buckets for a full load, the weight of the clothes and water just slow down considerably, and they swirl around slower than the most gentle of gentle cycles. This equates to clothes which do NOT get that clean, and really, are only being swirled in kinda murky soapy water. This is great if you only want to rinse them out, but forget about washing any dirty underwear or diapers with "biological klingons" -- as they will still be there when you're done.

9. Bottom line of all this? I was exhausted with all the effort I went to, to avoid going across the complex to the laundry room. I did NOT save money, because of the considerable investment of my time, energy, and manual labor.

Really, I think the only place I'd recommend this machine, is if you want a simple, fast, easy to use method of rinsing out bathing suits and towels near a pool or campground, and, you've set the unit up outside, on a patio, next to a hose. You can use the hose to fill it up without sloshing buckets, put the bathing suits and towels in it, wash out the chlorine and dirt, and drain it right into the ground or flower bed. Hang out the beach towels and suits, or clothes next to a clothesline, and you're done. Anything "INSIDE" your apartment or house, and you'll just get frustrated.

Remember, at anywhere between $60 and $100 for this machine you're better off using that to put down on a real compact washing machine with a water hookup, legit drain hose, and spin cycle.

So, I've got one more appliance that doesn't do what I really needed. I have once again "got what I could afford" instead of "got what I need." I'm now out the money, and, still have to use the laundry

GE WDRR2500KWW King-Size Capacity Top Load White Washer Review

GE WDRR2500KWW King-Size Capacity Top Load White WasherI bought this washer from Amazon.com shipped via seller Abt Electronics in April 2009, but did not receive the washer until May 2009.

The 1st delivery man forgot to come on the scheduled delivery day. I waited at the house all day and took a day off for nothing. I rescheduled and they gave me another all-day appointment and I told them to forget it. The phone operator said I live at the end of the route... After telling them to cancel the order, they agreed to come in the morning. The 2nd delivery attempt was relatively smooth and the delivery man was fairly efficient.

Now the washer...I ABSOLUTELY HATE THIS WASHER. I wish I did cancel this order.

This GE monstrosity is the worst washer I have ever bought in my life and I have bought many since I provide washer and dryer in my rentals. I will NEVER buy another GE washer.

First of all, it cleans HORRIBLY, if it cleans at all.

To get anything somewhat clean, everything has to be washed twice ALL the time and I must use the highest level water and rinse twice.

Secondly, it has ripped many items of clothing.

Last but not least, it is extremely noisy and shakes violently during the spinning cycle.

I wish there was a review on this item to warn me from the WORST purchase of my life.

I'm NOT buying the extended warranty because I want this washer to die, so I can get something else. I thought about donating it to the local shelter, but I hate to give them something as CRAPPY as this machine.

This GE washer simply belongs in the LANDFILL.

G.E. WHRE5550KWW 4.1 Cu. Ft. Top Load Washer (White) Review

G.E. WHRE5550KWW 4.1 Cu. Ft. Top Load WasherFirst, let me say that historically I've never bought G.E. appliances---especially laundry appliances. My youthful years spent working at Sears as an appliance delivery/installation technician (1986-1991) showed me more than a fair share of fairly new but recently deceased G.E. washers. I remember one customer who had only had hers about a year (and was obviously rich enough to simply buy another rather than repair it). I know that all of this was nearly 15 to 20 years ago and much can change with a company's quality (remember when Maytag appliances were still good and Hyundai cars were horrible?), still, it kept me away from G.E. washers for many years. Ironically, G.E. has built for many years probably the best line of refrigerators and ranges in the industry.

If you're reading this review then it's obvious that you know a thing or two about washers. I don't really need to go into the hows and whys, but I'd like to focus this review on what is unique about this washer.

1. Stainless steel tub!!! Hey, I'm a fool for a stainless steel tub, although I can't really say that they are any better than others. Remember the cool Speed Queens and their once-patented stainless steel tubs?

2. Lack of agitator/"Hydrowave." One benefit of front loading washers is that they can wash more clothes, yet get them cleaner and treat them more gently than a top loading washer with an agitator. Well, this machine is still a top loader but lacks an agitator---at least what we know as an agitator. I suppose the little "nub" in the middle of the tub is the agitator. At any rate, this machine employs what G.E. calls its "Hydrowave" system. Most likely, this is yet another industry buzzword.

3. Super capacity! According to the manual, this has a capacity of 4.1 cubic feet. That's big! Other "super capacity" washers are usually around 3.5 cubic feet. This extra capacity is achieved, of course, by the lack of the traditional agitator.

4. Quiet! In terms of quietness, this machine is what I'll call "library quiet." It really is wonderful not to hear the "clunka clunka" from the Maytag piece of garbage it replaced! It sits perfectly still like a good little church boy during the spin cycle.

5. Drier clothes. No, this is not a one-in-all machine like I've seen in motor homes and Parisian apartments, but this thing gets clothes drier after the spin cycle than any washer I've ever known. Drier clothes after washing means less time in the dryer and, ultimately, less energy consumed.

6. Options. In addition to the multiple cycles and settings on this machine, two extra "bells and whistles" that may prove handy are the "Extra Rinse" option and/or the "Extra Spin" option. I've not used them yet, but certainly see the benefit.

***** WORD TO THE WISE ***** Do not overfill your washing machine! 4.1 cubic feet doesn't mean that you can force 50 pounds of dirty laundry into the maw of this appliance---or any other washer. Nothing shortens the lifespan of a washing machine more than overfilling the machine, yet almost everyone does it. The rule is to fill it no more than halfway from the bottom of the tub. If fact, this washer only fills slightly more than halfway on "Super" capacity. This is probably the reason some reviewers have complained that the machine left some articles of laundry dry in their machine.

Maytag White Top Load Washer Review

Maytag White Top Load WasherOver the past decade, Maytag's reputation has really gone in the tank. Since Whirlpool bought them in 2008 things have looked up in the overall ratings from JD Power and Consumer Reports. I bought this unit the day after Thanksgiving and if I could go back, I would buy something else. It is quiet and I have had no problems with any of the features, except the auto water level. In half of the loads it stops filling to early and the clothes do not get cleaned properly. We have called and they have instructed us exactly how to load the machine and we read the instructions, we have two BA and a Master Degree - my wife and I know how to do laundry, and still it does not always work right. It is a real pain when after a full cycle there are towels that have dry spots on them, or jeans that do not come clean, or our kids clothes that are not getting as clean as they can. The worst part is there is no over-ride; you are stuck with this feature. So now we stand there and continually open the lid while it fills which resets the auto feature. If we do that 2-3 times it fully fills and stuff gets clean. If the machine fills, it washes really well, is quiet, and so far has been acceptable after 6 weeks. But when it does not fill correctly - WORTHLESS! And we bought the matching dryer - it is dead as we wait for the repairman who is coming in 8 days! Go elsewhere!
